What is CBN? Understanding cannabinol

Cannabinol, or CBN, is a unique cannabinoid most commonly formed through the degradation of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). When THC is dried, stored, and heated the CBN compound begins to form.

It’s important to note early on that CBN does not have any psychoactive characteristics and is safe for ingestion without the risk of getting “high”. In fact, cannabis users might be familiar with potency loss from extended periods of storage. This is due to the compounds synthesizing into a new form after exposure to elements such as oxidation.

Interestingly, this cannabinoid is not heavily produced by the marijuana or hemp plant. It is more likely formed as a byproduct of other compounds produced by the plant. However, due to the nature of drying, storing, and shipping the plant it is very commonly found in cannabis-based products.

CBN is produced in lower quantities than its more popular counterparts Cannabidiol (CBD) and THC. But as scientist refocus their lense on the growing popularity of these cannabiniods it is showing extreme promise in the treatment of a number of illnesses.

What are the Benefits of CBN?

Tumor Growth Inhibition: Quite a few studies have been conclusive on the effects of CBN when treating specific types of tumors and cancers.

Inflammation: Similar to most cannabinoids, CBN offers anti-inflammatory effects through its impact on endocannabinoid receptor activity.

Bacterial Infection: Studies have shown CBN to be effective when fighting strains that are resistant to antibiotics.

Bone Growth: We’re learning that the skeleton is physiologically regulated by endocannabinoid CB2 receptors. This fascinating discovery means CBN could have impacts on bone and mineral density loss.

Pain Relief: A number of cannabinoids have been shown effective in producing analgesic effects without the intoxication found from many other pain relief methods.

Anti-Convulsant & Sedative: It’s been determined to be a natural anti-convulsant. Some users have reported a sense of sedation, but
