CBD Oils and Topicals

CBD can be bought in several different forms, and each product is different in the way it affects you and the symptoms it relieves.

More and more variations of CBD products are being released onto the market every day, but it’s important to do your own research and testing to determine the best products and dosing schedule for you.

Topics and oils, usually in the forms of tinctures, are amongst the most popular methods for taking CBD. When used separately or together, they are both used for relieving symptoms based on your needs.

By knowing the advantages of each, and when the best times to take which, you can better decide which is right for you.

What is Topical CBD?

CBD topicals are primarily used for helping to relieve mild physical discomfort. Topicals are typically creams or balms that are infused with CBD and applied externally on the body, the same way normal lotions or creams are.

The CBD from these topicals are absorbed through the epidermis and pores in your skin, and goes to work interacting with the cannabinoid receptors already in your body.

CBD topicals made with hemp based materials can also contain an array of other beneficial nutrients to moisturize and invigorate your skin. Many people choose CBD topicals as it’s a quick and convenient way to get the benefits of CBD directly on the areas that need it most.

For example, if your shoulder or back has been experiencing soreness or discomfort, applying and rubbing in a small amount of a CBD topical will help to relieve the symptoms and leave your skin feeling refreshed and soothed.

Because CBD topicals are applied directly to the targeted area, the effects can be felt almost instantly, and can be much more efficient than other methods. However, being as though it is a topical product, no matter how much you apply, the CBD won’t be absorbed into the bloodstream, which is sometimes necessary for relieving other symptoms.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil, also known as oral CBD, is consumed orally, and also comes in a variety of product types, including tinctures, edibles, and capsules.

Oral CBD is typically taken either sublingually (meaning drops under the tounge), or by digestion.

Consuming CBD Sublingually

The sublingual, or “under the tongue” method is typically the most potent method of CBD digestion, and is most commonly used with CBD tinctures. This method requires dropping the CBD oil from tinctures directly underneath your tongue and holding for 30 to 60 seconds before swallowing.

The CBD gets absorbed through the capillaries in your mouth and enters directly into the bloodstream and eventually to the cannabinoid receptors of the ECS. This method has one of the highest bioavailability rates compared to other methods of taking CBD, mainly due to the fact that the CBD molecules are sent directly to your bloodstream, bypassing the need to be fully metabolized.

Consuming CBD Through Ingestion

Ingesting CBD means directly eating or swallowing the product, and is most typically used with edibles, capsules, or gummies.

When eating CBD, the molecules first need to be metabolized and ingested, which can make for longer onset times of the effects. However, due to this, research shows that ingesting CBD also gives the patient the longest lasting effects out of other methods.

When is Which More Effective?

If you’re still having difficulty deciding which type of CBD product may be best for you, it’s important to identify the reasons you’re taking it, and what you want to get out of the experience.

Using CBD topicals works best when you have a direct area that needs relief, such as a sore, aching muscles, or other tension or physical discomfort you may have in your body.

Using CBD oils and other orally ingested products go directly to the bloodstream, where they can then bind and interact with your cannabinoid receptors that reach the central and peripheral systems, such as the immune system.

Target Area

CBD topicals are best used for providing relief to minor discomforts in joints and muscles, along with other irritating skin symptoms.

Because of this, many athletes utilize the effects of CBD topical after workouts and games to provide much needed relief to their hard working muscles.

Overall Symptoms

Depending upon the symptoms you’re experiencing, it may make more sense to utilize oral CBD through products like CBD tinctures, or edibles. This can be a suitable choice for people experiencing stress, anxiety, general bowel discomfort, or the more impactful symptoms of syndromes such as IBS and Chron’s Disorder.

Additionally, people utilize the effects of CBD differently. For some, taking a few drops of a tincture before bed helps to relax their mind and body to get a more restful sleep. For others, taking a capsule or gummy in the morning assists in reducing stress and anxiety so they can confidently take on your day.

When it comes to specific symptoms, it’s best to do your own research or consult with your doctor to determine the appropriate products and dosing schedule for you.

Onset Time

Another important aspect to note when deciding between CBD products to use, is how quickly the effects will take place, and how long they’ll stay for.

As mentioned above, CBD topicals, once applied directly, provide direct effects and relief to the targeted areas.

In terms of oral CBD, the effect onset time largely depends on the method of ingestion you’re using. The “under the tounge” method typically delivers effects the fastest as it is sent directly to your bloodstream, whereas other methods of digestion, like eating or swallowing, can take longer to take effect, but will provide longer lasting results.
